Minimalist house design

Immersed in vegetation on the outskirts of Lusaka, a private client decided to build a modern house and engaged us to help him design his home. The project brief called for a minimalist house design, sleek lines and bold volumes. We proposed a double volume living area that would house the dining room, living room and entrance with views in all directions. A large cantilevered canopy shields the glass facade from the beating sun and rain creating a covered veranda in front of the living spaces. A secondary, more intimate veranda is formed through another lower canopy that provides a cool, doubly shaded area ideal for external sitting.

The facade towards the car park and entrance is a line of vertical slits, that provides privacy to the occupants while allowing daylight into the living areas.
The bedroom block develops towards the north allowing daylight in while protecting from the western afternoon sun. An incline on the overhanging canopy allows for a thinner side profile, enhancing the minimalist look of the house while providing structural integrity.
